Syracuse University
Syracuse, New York
May 24 - June 4, 2021
NOTE: Applications for Seminars have closed, but the deadline to apply for Workshops has been extended to Nov. 15th, 2020.
The departments of Communication and Rhetorical Studies and Writing Studies, Rhetoric, and Composition at Syracuse University are pleased to host the ninth biennial Rhetoric Society of America Summer Institute from May 24-June 4, 2021.
It has taken longer than is typical to announce the institute program and open the application process. This is because in consultation with our SU steering committee, RSA leadership, and a recently formed RSA ad hoc contingency planning committee, we decided to make the decision now rather than later to host the 2021 RSA Summer Institute entirely online. We have been working with seminar and workshop leaders to make preliminary decisions about timeframe and mode of delivery; other planning details will be refined in the months to come. We believe a virtual institute is the safest choice with the most promise in this pandemic context, and we believe making this decision to go virtual from the beginning will allow us and the leaders ample time to create an excellent institute even in an age of coronavirus. We hope you will be as excited as we are about the 2021 RSA Summer Institute program.
We will offer:
7 primarily synchronous seminars, Monday, May 24 to Friday, May 28
1 primarily asynchronous seminar, Monday, May 24 to Friday, June 4
23 primarily synchronous workshops, Tuesday, June 1 to Friday, June 4
3 primarily asynchronous workshops, Tuesday, June 1 to Friday, June 4
For more information, contact Charles E. Morris III, Patrick W. Berry, or Ezikio Lpez at rsa2021@syr.edu.
After completing this step, you will receive an automatic email including a link to access your application in the event that you are interrupted or need to make edits before the deadline.
Application Options
You will be required to supply your:
Faculty Level
Degree Program
Year of PhD graduation (past or expected)
You will also be allowed to select up to three workshops AND up to three seminars. You can apply to attend one workshop, one seminar, or both a workshop AND a seminar! Whichever option you prefer, we encourage you to list (and rank) multiple workshops/seminars that you are interested in attending. The more options you give us, the better chance we have of finding a spot for you at the Institute. We promise we will do our best to get you into your top choice!
If it really, truly is the case that you are only interested in attending one particular session ("It's either session X or nothing!"), then don't list alternatives. However, if you list only one option, your chances of attending go down because we have fewer options to work with.
You will be required to provide a brief (250 word maximum) rationale for your interest in the seminar(s)/ workshop(s) you have selected. Please address whatever experiences you have in the area. Mention past/current/future research projects that align with the session. Finally, mention anything else that may be relevant: teaching experiences, work experiences, life experiences, institutional experiences, etc.
Finally, we hope to be able to offer a limited number of scholarships for graduate students. You will have the opportunity to state your interest in one of these scholarships.
